Have you ever wondered how crossword puzzles are created? Will Johnston presents a behind-the-scenes look at the hidden craft and art behind the puzzles you see in newspapers every day. Johnston, a nationally published crossword puzzle constructor and moderator of The New York Times online crossword forum, will demonstrate and discuss inventing puzzle themes, creating diagrams, filling them with interesting words and phrases, and writing tricky and straightforward clues. Why attend? You’ll come away with new insights to enhance your own crossword solving skills and deepen your enjoyment of this popular pastime. And hanging out with other crossword fans is fun! Bring a pencil to try some mini-activities. Appropriate for all ages.
About the speaker Will Johnston, a Watertown resident, has published crosswords in the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Boston Herald, and New York Sun. He is a textbook editor in Boston. This year he ranked among the top 20 fastest solvers in the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. Driving Directions and Parking Robbins Library is easily accessible via Route 2, just northwest of Cambridge. Free parking is available in the rear of Robbins Library in the library lot and at the yellow Robbins House. From points west and north: Take Route 95 (Route 128) to Route 2 (east). Take exit 59 for Pleasant St./Route 60. Turn left onto Pleasant Street. Go one mile to traffic light. Turn left onto Mass. Ave. Go half a block, and the library is on the left. From points east and south: Take Fresh Pond Parkway or Alewife Brook Parkway to Route 2 (west). Exit at Pleasant St./Route 60 and turn right onto Pleasant. Go one mile to traffic light. Turn left onto Mass. Ave. Go half a block, and the library is on the left. Public Transportation The library is directly on the #77 bus line which runs every 10 minutes from Harvard and Porter Square subway stations in Cambridge.
